The ladder
Data engineering levels track the scope of the data platform you own. An entry data engineer builds pipelines against an existing warehouse; a senior owns the architecture of the data platform and its reliability; a principal sets the data strategy and the standards the whole org's analytics and ML depend on. Pay scales with how foundational the systems you own are.
Data engineering pay sits between backend and data-science pay at the same level, with a premium at the senior and staff rungs because well-run data platforms are scarce and directly enable everything downstream. The bands below reflect verified tech-employer data-engineering compensation.
Within each level, engineers who own real-time and large-scale streaming systems sit at the top of the band; batch-pipeline maintenance work clusters nearer the midpoint. The shift from maintaining pipelines to architecting the platform is the biggest pay differentiator inside the senior data-engineering band.
IC track
Total-compensation bands for the individual-contributor ladder in San Francisco. The midpoint is the typical offer for a calibrated candidate; the range spans company tier and negotiation outcomes. Senior and above fold in bonus and equity.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| L3 | Entry / New grad | 0-2 yrs | $82,000$125,000 | $100,000 | Base |

Management track
Data-engineering management maps onto the parallel ladder, and because platform teams are small and high-leverage, the first-line manager band overlaps heavily with the senior IC band, keeping the move close to pay-neutral.
| Level | Title | IC equivalent | Total comp range | Midpoint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M1 | Engineering Manager | L5/L6 | $291,000$443,000 | $354,000 |
| M2 | Senior Manager | L6/L7 | $483,000$759,000 | $562,000 |
| M3 | Director | L7+ | $589,000$926,000 | $686,000 |
Translations
Every employer numbers its ladder differently, but the rungs line up. Here is how the standard L3-L7 ladder translates to the schemes you are most likely to meet when interviewing for data engineer roles.
| Company | Entry → Principal |
|---|---|
| L3 / L4 / L5 / L6 / L7 | |
| Meta | E3 / E4 / E5 / E6 / E7 |
| Amazon | Data Eng I / II / III / Principal |
| Databricks | Senior / Staff / Principal |
Level translations are approximate. Companies calibrate scope differently, so the same code can mean slightly different things across employers.
Each level band starts from the published percentile data for data engineer roles in San Francisco. The four documented seniority tiers (junior, mid, senior, staff) are mapped onto the standard L3-L7 ladder: junior anchors L3, mid anchors L4, the senior tier spans L5 and L6 because in real ladders it is the widest band and covers two promotion steps, and the staff tier anchors L7. The low and high ends of each band come from the tier's 25th and 75th percentiles; the midpoint is the tier median.
Senior, staff, and principal bands are reported as total compensation, folding in bonus and equity, because that is how those levels are paid in practice. Entry and mid bands are base-heavy. The management track is anchored to the same tiers with the documented manager premium applied at the senior-manager and director levels.
Reference data only. Real offers vary by employer, level calibration, team, and negotiation, and frontier-lab pay can sit well above these bands. Nothing here is financial advice. Primary sources: Levels.fyi 2025 Data Engineer + US BLS OES May 2024 (SOC 15-1252) (2025).
