An influence test. Leadership without a title counts most: show you moved people toward an outcome by initiative, not rank.
Why it is asked
Leadership questions are not reserved for managers. The strongest answers, especially from individual contributors, show leadership without authority: a moment where you saw something that needed doing, took ownership, and moved other people toward an outcome without being able to order them to. That is the trait that predicts whether someone will grow.
Choose a story where your specific actions, not your title, drove the result. Make the before-and-after clear: there was drift, ambiguity, or a gap, you stepped into it, and because of how you led, the team ended up somewhere better. Name what you actually did (set a direction, unblocked people, made a call, gave credit) rather than narrating the project at large.
Be careful to credit the team while keeping your own contribution legible. A good leadership answer makes you look like someone others want to follow, which means it is generous about the people you led.

Scenario: Engineer who rallied a stalled cross-team effort. Read it for the shape, then swap in your own story.
Three teams needed to agree on a shared API but the effort had stalled for a month with no owner.
I was not the lead and had no authority over the other teams, but the delay was hurting my own roadmap.
I wrote a one-page proposal, set up a single working session, and made the meeting easy to say yes to by coming with a concrete draft rather than an open question. I tracked the open decisions in a shared doc and chased each one to closure, giving the other engineers credit for their input as we went.
We agreed on the contract in two weeks and shipped against it. Afterward two of those engineers asked me to drive the next cross-team effort, which told me the leadership had been real even without a title.

Avoid these
By role
Driving a cross-team technical decision or mentoring through a hard launch both demonstrate influence without authority.
Go beyond running a team: show how you developed a person, set direction in ambiguity, or made an unpopular but right call.
Aligning stakeholders around a contentious priority is leadership; show how you built the coalition.
